Ch. 43:14, first time the word “mercy” is used in the Bible. Jacob asks “God All-Powerful, grant you mercy…from the man” (Joseph).

When you think of the typology in this story, this is just a huge wow moment.

I just laugh out loud every time I read verse 43:18. The brothers are being taken to a feast. An animal is slaughtered for the feast. They are going to dine at the table in the house of governor. They are thinking that they are going to be arrested and made slaves in his house.

And they are concerned he will take their…donkeys. I think that strikes me as so funny because Joseph didn’t need their donkeys. He had all of Egypt at his disposal. He was the second most powerful person in the world. He snapped his fingers and people ran to do his bidding. If he wanted donkeys, they would be found and brought to him.

This makes me think of how I get caught up in worldly worries and concerns when God All-Powerful is preparing a feast for me. I take my eyes off of Him, and focus on the worldly concerns in my life, my donkeys. 😟

    Psalm 22-

In TTW, Sandy Adams provides some background on Psalm 22.
-Jesus quoted it from the cross, but in Aramaic, the street language of the time
-It was written around 1000 bc, 500 years before the Persians invented a form of crucifixion, 600 years before the Romans perfected it
-In the psalm there are 33 different details that are fulfilled by Jesus on the cross
-The Gospels provide a perspective of the cross; the details, when, where
-The NT letters provide a perspective of the cross, the why
-Psalm 22 provides a perspective from the cross, who
-40% of the OT references in the NT, come from Psalms

“And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.
But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, Lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭45:5, 7-8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

    * Joseph trusted God through all of those trials and now he could see how God’s hand was working all along.

“and bring your father and your families back to me. I will give you the best of the land of Egypt and you can enjoy the fat of the land.’

“You are also directed to tell them, ‘Do this: Take some carts from Egypt for your children and your wives, and get your father and come. Never mind about your belongings, because the best of all Egypt will be yours.’ ””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭45:18-20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

    * God’s abundant grace is on display. ❤️

“So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,” he replied. “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.””
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭46:1-4‬ ‭NIV‬‬

    * God’s lovingkindness is on display here; He comes to offer Jacob/Israel comfort & reassurance. I feel that Jacob did not want to go anywhere without God’s sure leading…and God told him two very comforting points:
    1. I will be with you!
    2. Do not be afraid.

    TTW notes:

“He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭47:2‬ ‭

*Pastor Kris mentioned that the number 5 in the Bible is a symbol of God’s grace & favor.
Notice that Joseph presented his brothers before Pharaoh (the king) and he did not bring up all their faults or mention all the terrible things they had done to him!! He presented them as if they were good brothers.

Looking at the typology, that is what Jesus will do for us. One day, He will present us before our Heavenly Father with grace and we will be WITHOUT FAULT; we will be clean & justified.

24 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy—

25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

    Jude 1:24-25
