Ch 34 is disturbing on so many levels, but the God in His Word doesn’t fail to show the good, the bad, and the ugly that is our human nature. Kris in Through The Word was helpful with this chapter. Also Gen 49:5-7 tells us the consequences that followed Simeon and Levi and their tribes.

In Gen 49:5-7, Jacob speaks a curse over their anger. Simeon’s tribe would become the smallest and would be surrounded by Judah. Levi’s tribe would become a picture of our reconciliation and the grace of God, but they would not own land.

Got questions. org is helpful here. Search “the tribe of Simeon” and “the tribe of Levi”

“So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.

Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.”

So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.

Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭35:2-5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

    * We knew Rachel had the “gods” of her father, Laban, but now we see that many of Jacob’s family had false gods.

I see this story as a kind of turning point where Jacob/Israel began to show real leadership in his family.

** We see that they submitted to & honored God and God provided protection for them & no one pursued them.

    Chapter 37:

Pastor Kris on TTW brings out the typology here—
The similarities between Joseph & Jesus

    1. Jesus was loved by the Father
    2. Jesus was sent by the Father to his brothers (the Israelites)
    3. Jesus was betrayed & sold for silver coins.
    4. A robe was put on him.
    5. He was mocked.
    6. He was put in tomb, rather than a cistern and He too, came out.

The story of Joseph & Jesus is not the same, but the connections/hints are no accident.

    TTW notes
More connections with Joseph’s & Jesus’ story:

    1. Joseph is a leader who leads by serving.
    2. He was taken down to Egypt.
    3. Joseph seems to have an awareness of God in all things.
    4. He was accused of things he didn’t do.
    5. He suffered for the crimes of another.
    6. In prison, Joseph was suffering among two others, one of whom found salvation ( the cup bearer), just like Jesus on the cross between two criminals & the thief next to Jesus on the cross was saved.
    7. A baker ( bread) and a cupbearer (wine)… the 2 elements of communion.
    8. At the Lord’s Supper, Jesus said, “Do this in Remembrance of Me.” Joseph says to the cup bearer, “When all goes well with you, remember me.”

    Jesus said:
“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,”
    John 5:39

Chap. 39: One thing that jumped out at me was the Lord was with Joseph!

    1. “The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master.

    2. When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did,

    3. the Lord was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.

    4. The warden paid no attention to anything under Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with Joseph and gave him success in whatever he did.”
    ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭39:2-3, 21, 23‬ ‭

    Genesis 41:

I think this is another foreshadowing of Jesus in Joseph’s story.

    * Joseph was humbled/ Jesus put aside his glory and humbled himself.
    * Pharoah raised Joseph’s status to 2nd in command under himself.
    * God raised Jesus up & gave him authority.
    * Joseph was put in charge of all Egypt/ Jesus will rule the whole earth.
    * Joseph was dressed in robes of fine linen and rode in a chariot./

When Jesus returns He will return in Power & Authority, wearing a robe & riding a great white horse!

“11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war.

12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself.

13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God.

14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.

15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations.
“He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty.

16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:

king of kings and lord of lords.”

    Revelation 19: 11-16
